OK, I know there are no big contests left with a significant Hispanic vote unless it get's all the way to Puerto Rico (personally I think it's over by then), but this was just too good to pass up.
Disclaimer
This is anecdotal and the very small poll was certainly not scientific nor professionally conducted, but the results are surprising and fascinating nonetheless.
<Check it out below the fold>
So my wife who is Colombian-American was invited to the baptism (Roman Catholic of course) of her best friend's one year old daughter. After the ceremony there was the traditional reception at the friend's house.
The friends invitees are all hispanic, mostly Colombian and a few Cubans. The Colombians are all staunch Uribe supporters (no surpise, he has 70-80% support in Colombia, and probably closer to 90% here in the US). This is interesting because Uribe has basically said that he detests Obama for his failure to recognize Colombia's real progress in reducing violence among labor leaders.
Well, one of the attendees, the friend's sister polled all of the 13 adults present to see whom they support for president. Out of 13 hispanics present, ONLY 1 supported Clinton (and she said only because Clinton is a woman) and none supported McCain. All the rest, every one, supports Obama. WOW!!!
Most of these are registered voters. There was one resident alien who can't vote and two illegals who also obviously can't vote. But the remaining ten are registered voters who intend to vote for Obama in the general, (here in Colorado we have already had our caucuses). Interestingly it was one of the illegals who conducted the survey.
I know most of these people, they span at least three generations and range from blue collar/working class to white collar middle class.
As I said in the disclaimer, this is far from scientific, but it does seem to suggest that something is afoot.
First (among this group), it wipes out the notion that signifcant percentages of hispanics won't vote for an African American.
Wipes out the notion that McCain could run away with the cuban hispanics.
Wipes out the notion that older hispanics won't vote for an African American.
Wipes out the notion that hispanics will vote overwhelmingly for Clinton.
Think about it, if Obama can win over these Colombians who's beloved homeland leader dislikes Obama and if he can win these Cubans away from the republicans, it could bode well for this voting block in the general. These people are engaged and intend to vote.
